A Farmers Insurance agent had asked my girlfriend at the time to see if I could rebuild the office network and systems because of how loud the systems were, how hot it got in the office and how it seemed like there were zero remote capabilities. After learning the office "setup" and that the agent had been buying the cheapest PC's possible off eBay it was time to go to work.

One week is what it took to map out the office and come up with a proposal that would improve the agents office. Connecting all the machines, printer, NAS via ethernet to a new router already sped up the office communications. Getting the phones on their own VLAN for operation was easily handled at the router. This addressed the spotty wi-fi and slow document file transfers between machines and why email was taking a century to receive.

Next was dealing with the noise and how loud it was in the office. These cheap systems were i7's, full ATX towers with six 120mm fans, GPU's and 850 watt PSU's, humming away as the fans screeched to keep the systems cool and office employees smashed away on mechanical keyboards that seemed to have been dug out of time from the 1980's. All of these systems were running different versions of windows as well, no additional systems security, it was obvious to me that things needed to be stepped up in the office.

To drastically lower the wattage and heat being produced, I made the choice to switch all the systems out to Intel NUC's running i3's, 250GB of storage, 8GB of RAM and Windows 11 Pro. The Agent I made a special PC for him because he loved the towers so much and themed a "Farmers Insurance PC" just for him, which made him super excited! Lastly, for the peripherals, each system got Razer Ornata keyboards and Razer Naga mice.

The systems weren't just done after having Windows 11 Pro installed, bit locker had to be setup and the system encrypted initially after the OS install. This was to get the system to fit within the Farmers Insurance required regulations. Each employee got a USB stick they would put on their keyring, to take home with them every day. Before using each machine they would have to plug in their USB stick, enter their password and the system would unlock for them, decrypting the data within. This way if the systems were stolen over night, none of the data in the systems would be retrievable.

The next week I debriefed the Farmers Insurance agent about his new system and immediately he wanted to know if he could remote into the office from Italy because he had plans to go in the next 2 weeks. I told him absolutely, with his staff in the office or out of the office, everyone could remote in and still work. The agent was ecstatic and my girlfriend was already planning, spending the time that the agent was in Italy, at my house working, BBQ'ing and swimming in the pool!

Feedback I got from the Farmers Insurance agent was immediate after a week. I told me with surprise that it was drastically cooler in the office and asked how I did it. The NUC's utilize about 45Watts of power max vs your cheap bought systems on eBay that were running 850Watts, almost no heat was being produced now in the office by the systems. He then mentioned how no one is yelling at each other, the neighboring offices hadn't come to tell him to keep it down, everyone was quiet and he couldn't hear the keyboards any more. I explained that the Razer Ornata is a membrane keyboard that suppresses the noise while keeping a low profile feel. When the Razer Naga's were brought up, the staff circled around and complimented me on the Naga selection.

Data entry had become so much faster now that they are inputting numbers with their thumbs. They all said it was like a game trying to get themselves used to using the number pad but when they actually were able to, data entry times reduced drastically, especially with a phone in one had and having to move around the interface while inputting numbers. It made sense, they loved it, everyone was super happy!

To finish things off, you're probably wondering what happened during Italy and I can say it was one of the most fun times I've had with someone in a long time. I setup a PC for my girlfriend to use, forwarded all calls from her desk to her cell phone, we had a little shaded area by the pool for the phones to go that was also a "no splash" zone. The BBQ stayed lit, my little Bose portable speaker stayed busy the whole week playing whatever we wanted. Her boss called a few times, no biggie, I let him know what we were doing while he was in Italy doing his thing and he laughed about it because of how capable his new system and staff had just become!
